Lara here … when i first started scrapbooking i felt safest using a photo, scrapbook paper and embellishments. I found tutorials, I bought magazines, I “lifted” layout ideas and made alot of meaningful pages. Then I found a site called Gauche Alchemy that really piqued my interest. They didn’t have the same kind of items most scrapbook stores had and although their kits looked so interesting, pretty and EXCITING I had NO idea how I could ever incorporate them into my scrapbooking!
I bought my first kit, an ACME Kit, and it was off to the races. Now i can’t imagine a piece without some sort of “found” or “repurposed” object, as is much of what Gauche Alchemy is about. It provides a sense of familiarity and connection to a layout, IMHO.
We here at Gauche Alchemy have heard this time and time again, I’m a living example, as are our talented team of “Don’t Be Scared, Scrappers!” scrappers.
I’d like to introduce you to Celeste Brodnik.
We asked her to create a typical page of her choice, paper only (no embellishments) but to not commit it to paper with glue quite yet.
This is what she came up with:
Look at that cute pussy cat! And the colors are so lush and inviting! I love the torn paper, very organic!
We then sent Celeste some Gauche Alchemy products and asked her to use 2-3 pieces of ephemera from it to add to her layout.
She used some sheets from an old magazine to continue the circle thing she had going, repeating the original circles, marrying the “traditional” scrapbook paper with the “found” text paper. She also added a graphic and some punchinella to add a sort of frame to the page – it helps draw your eye towards the center where the photos are! Lastly she layered a flower and gold coin to finish it off.
There, now that wasn’t so hard, was it? A lovely page with a hint of gaucheness to it! Just remember to take it step by step! Start in your comfort zone then slowly but confidently step out of it…
